It is with great sadness that Tiverton Town Council has to announce the passing away of Councillor Anthony Bush.

Councillor Anthony Bush

I and my fellow Town Councillors are mourning the death of our colleague Cllr Anthony (Tony) Bush this week aged 73.

Tony can be regarded as a true Tivertonian having been born in Tiverton castle, at that time owned by his grandparents. He was educated at Mount Radford School in Exeter, before embarking on a career in journalism which saw him working on the Western Morning News, Western Daily Press and Bath Chronicle before heading to Fleet Street and the Press Association. He later joins an Export Trade magazine, becoming editor and travelling the world, and launching titles of his own. Anthony was a magistrate for 18 years, 16 of which were spent as chairman of the Bench, before returning to his home town Tiverton about 10 years ago.

His wife of 46 years June sadly died in 2015 and Tony looked for other interests resulting in his being co opted onto the Town Council for Westexe Ward and later being elected to Mid Devon District Council in 2017.

Tony enjoyed his work as a councillor and was very conscientious in serving his local residents. I know Tony would have very much liked to have been Mayor. Sadly that cannot happen, but it is the Town’s loss.

Tony was liked by all and regarded as a true gentleman. He always spoke well considered words, and earned respect from his fellow councillors.

Rest in Peace, Tony, you will be sadly missed.

Proclamation of the Fair

On Friday 11th October, children from local primary schools including St John’s and Tidcombe gathered in the Pannier Market in Tiverton for this ancient tradition dating back to 1300’s.

The Beadle Alan Burnett, read the Proclamation and the Mayor Cllr Colin Slade spoke to the children, before the rolling of the pennies began. The children had fun gathering the pennies and were treated to a glass of orange squash after the ceremony courtesy of the Market Cafe.
