Tiverton in Bloom Gold Award

FOR the first time in the 50-year history of Britain in Bloom, Tiverton has scooped a prestigious gold award for the South West region.

The award is the climax of years of work to achieve the much sought-after status.

Members of the Tiverton committee who attended the South West In Bloom awards ceremony in Trowbridge were overjoyed by their success. Councillor Wally Burke, chairman of Tiverton in Bloom said: "I was absolutely delighted. I would like to thank the committee, helpers, sponsors and the public who supported us."

Cllr Burke also received a standing ovation and recognition for his contribution to South West in Bloom over more than two decades, while collecting the Jon Wheatley trophy for the best business park.

Tiverton narrowly lost out to Falmouth, which was named the overall winner in the Portman Cup category which Tiverton was in.

Tivertonians presented the second picture of the Merchants trail and in return a hand painted picture of Tiverton Town Hall was presented as a gift from Hofheim.

Skateboard ,BMX and scooter users in Tiverton say they are delighted with the newly opened park opposite the High School and Petroc College and matches their design hopes perfectly.

Skaters, bikers and BMXers begun using the new concrete sports facility following its official opening on June 6.

John Bell, from Viridor Credits which donated £100,000 towards the construction via their community landfill communities fund which it operates, cut the ribbon to mark the formal opening of the park with users and councillors looking on.
